Clean and Green Attracts Chinese Property Buyers
Brief:THE NORTHERN Rivers clean, green agricultural appeal has attracted increasing numbers of Chinese investors looking to purchase large rural holdings.

According to Nicolette van Wijngaarden, managing director of a boutique agency specialising in marketing luxury properties, "Quite a few Chinese Agents are approaching us, looking for rural holdings around Byron Bay as well as near Melbourne and Sydney.

"They are looking for a safe land option with a good earning capacity on larger parcels. They are after clean and green," she said.

"Most overseas investors have a long term investment view. Often they are happy for owners to stay and run the property. Some have a view to move to the area in the long term. They see Australia as a safe haven," she said.

A report released last week from a Chinese-language property listing website, showed Byron Bay had rocketed from 28th most popular search location for buying property in NSW to fourth spot.

Byron now sits behind only Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong for Chinese buyers searching on the website.

"I've just sold a vineyard in the Yarra Valley on 38 acres and a luxury house," van Wijngaarden said.

"It's too early to tell if Chinese investors are having an impact on market value here yet, she said.
