PORT Melbourne, the CBD and Fitzroy North are the city’s hot spots for new apartments despite concerns about oversupply of properties on the market.

New data released today shows that demand for new apartments nationally has increased by 10.7 per cent over the past 12 months, with Melbourne at its highest level.

The research showed that customer demand for inner-city areas was still strong.

Urban Development Institute of Australia’s Victorian chief executive Danni Addison said a growing population was leading to greater demand for both apartments and houses across Melbourne.

“Therefore, pressure will be on the availability of developable land,” Ms Addison said.

Chinese buyers were still eyeing popular suburbs such as Glen Waverley, Doncaster and Box Hill, although demand has slowed.

Melbourne was still the No. 1 destination for Chinese home buyers seeking property in Australia, the research found.

“The research tells us that housing in the established and outer suburbs remains high. Therefore, policy measures need to ensure that the industry is able to provide the housing people want in a way that limits upward pressure on price,” said Ms Addison.

Clifton Hill and Middle Park made the top six of most in-demand suburbs for renters nationwide.

But for buyers, Parkdale and East Melbourne were top of the shopping list.
